A significant place for the Buddhists, Bodh Gaya is a holy town in Uttar Pradesh. It is acclaimed as the place where Lord Buddha attained enlightenment. The Mahabodhi Temple complex is the ultimate place of visit here. The place shot in the limelight at the 18th century end. The main monastery came to known as Bodhimala Vihara and now it is Mahabodhi Temple. In 2002, it became a World Heritage Site. This place is a 110 km drive from Patna and from city of Gaya, it is 12 km. There is also daily bus service from Varanasi to Bodh Gaya.
It attracts tens of thousands of believers from all over the world. Bodhgaya situated near the river Niranjana, is one of the holiest Buddhist pilgrimage centres since it was here that Buddha attained enlightenment under the Bodhi tree. For Buddhists, Bodh Gaya is the most important of the main four pilgrimage sites related to the life of Gautama Buddha, the other three being Kushinagar, Lumbini, and Sarnath.
